Nicanor Parra Wins Cervantes Prize

Chilean poet Nicanor Parra has been awarded the Cervantes Prize. Parra is a poet, short story writer and essayist. He is also a mathematician. Parra is credited for creating anti-poetry, which introduced informal language into traditional verse.

The annual Cervantes Prize is awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Spain. The award carries a prize of 125,000 Euros (about $168,000 U.S.), which makes it one of richest literary prizes in the world. Spanish novelist Ana Maria Matute won the award in 2010.
