PBS Announces Site For Independent Filmmakers and Indie Film Lovers

Posted on June 9, 1998

PBS Online has launched "The Indie Scene on PBS: An Eye on the Best Independent Film and Video." The website, featuring extensive resources for independent film -- and videomakers, as well as cinephiles, is available at http://www.pbs.org/independents/.

"The Indie Scene on PBS" offers visitors a guide through the PBS primetime schedule, highlighting upcoming independent programs and extensive complementary information, including credits and behind-the-scenes background on independent productions. In addition, directors and producers of independent films broadcast on PBS will be available for online forums with site visitors. The first of these will be held beginning June 9 with Christine Fugate and Eren McGinnis, the filmmakers of Tobacco Blues, airing on PBS June 9 at 10 p.m. (check local listings). Tobacco Blues is featured as part of P.O.V., television's showcase for independent non-fiction films.

The site also includes RealVideo clips of select independent films broadcast on PBS, for viewing online; a reference guide for independent film producers interested in securing distribution and funding within the public television system; information on government, corporate and foundation financial assistance for independent film production; PBS's packaging, delivery and underwriting guidelines; and additional educational and outreach information.

For the film and video professional, "The Indie Scene" offers information, such as PBS funding guidelines, that, until now, had not been available in one place. To assist independent producers in acquiring financing, the site will soon include a list of those who have funded past independent programs. A list of other funding and grant-giving organizations will also be featured.
