Posted on August 20, 1998

Macmillan Publishing USA announced the appointment of Gordon Macomber as president of its newly created Consumer Reference (MCR) division. This new division, which joins Macmillan's existing consumer reference and computer publishing operations, will provide individual consumers with information on a wide variety of technology-centered and general interest categories.

The creation of MCR is part of a company-wide reorganization that aligns Macmillan around three publishing divisions: Macmillan Consumer Reference, Macmillan Education & Training (MET), and Macmillan Digital Publishing (MDP). MCR will focus on individual consumers and topics as varied as personal computer software and usage, travel and leisure activities, finance and investments, cooking and gardening, self-help, and many more; MET will focus on providing institutions with all of the resources they need to educate their students and employees; and MDP will concentrate on delivering information in digital format and through electronic channels in a variety of formats.

"This is a market-focused realignment, as well as a customer-focused realignment, designed to enhance the marketing and merchandising of our product," says Scott Flanders, president of Macmillan Publishing. "The combination of Gordon's proven leadership abilities, his vast product knowledge and sales acumen will drive the success of our company."

Macomber is currently the president of Macmillan Reference USA, a position he has held since its formation in January 1996, supervising many well-known and highly-respected brands, including: Macmillan, Frommer's, Betty Crocker, Webster's New World, Howell Book House, The Complete Idiot's Guides, J.K. Lasser, and Charles Scribner's Sons Reference. Prior to this he held a number of executive positions with Macmillan, including president of Macmillan Library Reference USA.
