University of Toronto Introduces New Web-Based Course

The Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto is introducing a new Web-based course for journalists, information professionals and others who need to monitor the growing number of news and curre information sources appearing on the World Wide Web.
Beginning October 20, the creators and instructors of the Faculty's popular web-based course, The Internet Guide, will be guiding students through the labyrinth of current awareness services: table of contents alerting services, push tools, profile based ews reporters, personal agents, news sources, and specialized newsletters. Keeping up with world news and what is happening in the field is one of the particular benefits of the Net. Everyone who needs to monitor news or current affairs will benefit from this in-depth examination of global sources.
The entire course will be conducted via the Internet through the use of e-mail, an electronic discussion group, live-chat, and web pages. The course runs for six weeks: October 20 to November 23 1997, and is repeated March 23 to April 30, 1998. The price $190 Canadian; $140 U.S.
On completion of this course, participants will:
•Be familiar with Table of Contents services for leading journals and
related document delivery services
•Know where to locate electronic
newsletters of interest
•Have set up personal profiles at major news
service sites
•Know the current options for push delivery
•Know the
major news sources on the Web including access to online versions of
newspapers, radio and TV transcripts
•Have used agent and
recommendation services for ongoing delivery of tailored
information
