Tribune-Review Publishing Company Unveils New Production Facility

Posted on October 23, 1997

The Tribune-Review Publishing Company today fired another salvo in the battle for Pittsburgh-area newspaper readers with the official opening of its NewsWorks production facility in Marshall Township.

"This is not just a production facility," said Publisher Richard M. Scaife. "It's a symbol of our commitment to produce an excellent newspaper for Pittsburgh residents. They've shown us they want this choice by buying our Pittsburgh Tribune-Review edition in ever-growing numbers."

Located on a 13.6-acre site in the RIDC Thorn Hill Industrial Park, the $43 million production center features a custom-built Goss Graphic Systems Inc. Newsliner press, which prints 65,000 copies per hour. Goss is recognized as the premier American manufacturer of advanced technology web offset equipment for the newspaper and commercial printing industries. The NewsWorks facility also houses extensive computerized design and pre-press production equipment, as well as insertion and packaging equipment which will provide more sophisticated zoning capabilities.

Also in the facility is the first robotic palletizer system in the United States. Manufactured by Machine Design Service Inc., this bulk loading system moves tied newspaper bundles and untied stacks onto pallets, resulting in faster and more accurate loading of newspapers on delivery trucks.
