Tor to Republish George R.R. Martin's The Ice Dragon

Posted on August 5, 2014

The Telegraph reports that Tor Books will republish The Ice Dragon, a children's book written by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. Award-winning Spanish artist Luis Royo will do all new artwork for the book.

The story was first published as part of an anthology in 1980 and in 2007 it got its own release. The book takes place in a small village in which winter goes on for a very long time. A young girl named Adara befriends a mysterious ice dragon that only appears when the weather is very, very cold. Adara is the only villager that can make the connection with the dragon, and it is up to her to save the village.

In A Dance with Dragons, Jon Snow recalls being a child and being told a story by Old Nan about an ice dragon, so it seems likely that the story is set in the same world back when Winter last ruled the land. We haven't seen any Ice Dragons in the book series or the television show, so we have to wonder: will Jon Snow get his very own Ice Dragon that he can talk to in a future book? What would happen if an Ice Dragon meets Daenerys Targaryen and her fire-breathing dragons?

The book will be released on October 21, 2014. It is available for purchase on Amazon.com.
