The New, Improved, More Exciting ISBN Numbers

Posted on March 3, 2005

The increase in the number of books being published has led to a decision to increase the ISBN number from 10 to 13 digits. These 3 extra digits will greatly increase the amount of ISBN numbers available. Part of the reason for the change is rise in the number of self-published and print-on-demand books.

Bisg.org has published a FAQ, which guides publishers through the exciting new change. Bowker's ISBN.org website also has information about the transition.
