The Manga Boom

Posted on May 12, 2004

Sales of manga comics are exploding in the United States and surprisingly the largest demographic reading the Japanese comics are teen and tween girls. Comics were more popular among young males in the U.S. before the manga boom. Manga appeals to girls because many of the comics have fantasy and romantic themes. The shojo manga genre of comics are targeted directly at girls. Teens in general like the comics because they are cheap and very light. The comics are becoming popular with publishers too. Del Rey Books, a division of Random House, recently announced they will be launching a manga imprint.
