Spotlight and The Big Short Win Screenplay Awards at the 2016 Oscars

Spotlight and The Big Short took home the screenwriting awards at this year's academy awards. Spotlight won Best Original Screenplay and The Big Short won the Best Adapted Screenplay.

Spotlight is written by Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer. The film also won Best Picture at this year's academy awards. Spotlight was up against Bridge of Spies, Ex Machina, Inside Out, and Straight Outta Compton. McCarthy and Singer are pictured backstage after accepting their Oscars in the above photograph.

McCarthy said in the acceptance speech, "We made this film for all the journalists who have and continue to hold the powerful accountable, and for the survivors whose courage and will to overcome is really an inspiration to all. We have to make sure this never happens again."

The Big Short was adapted from Michael Lewis's 2010 book by Adam McKay and Charles Randolph. It was up against Brooklyn, Carol, The Martian and Room.

McKay got political and offered some advice to voters during his acceptance speech. He said, "If you don't want big money to control government, don't vote for candidates who take money from big banks, oil, or weirdo millionaires."
