Slate Website Goes Free

Slate began charging a subscription fee for access to most of its content and services alomst one year ago. Effective today, all of Slate's current editorial content will be free. E-mail deliveries, the weekly print-out edition, "The Fray," and "The Compost" (the Slate archive) will remain available to subscribers only. Slate also plans to add new subscriber benefits.

Slate is changing its model based on estimates that it can now generate more revenue from advertisements due to the increased traffic it will receive by delivering more of its content for free. Slate's editor, Michael Kinsley, has provided a questiona and answer page in response to the sudden change on Slate's website.
