Scholastic to Publish Assassin's Creed Young Adult Book Series

Scholastic has announced a collaboration with the video game company Ubisoft to publish a series of young adult books set in the Assassin's Creed universe. The book series will be called Last Descendants.

Assassin's Creed is a hot video game franchise that involves time travel and famous historical figures. More than 96 million units have been sold to date. A film based on the games starring Michael Fassbender is in the works and set for a release this December. Fassbender signed on to star in the film in 2012.

The first novel in the series will launch in September 2016. It will be published simultaneously in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The second book will arrive in January 2017.

The series will follow a group of teens that get caught up in the centuries-old Assassin-Templar feud. The settings include present day, 1860s New York City and the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. Some of the historical figures featured in the novels will include William "Boss Tweed, Hernan Cortes and Adelina Patti.

The teens include Owen who is accused of a crime he is sure he didn't commit and Monroe, the IT guy at school. Monroe has a device called the Animus that enables user to explore genetic memories buried in their DNA. When Owen uses the Animus de uncovers the Trident of Eden, a powerful relic that makes Owen the target of two secret organizations, the Brotherhood of Assassins and the Templar Order.

The books are written by Matthew J. Kirby. He is the author of Icefall, The Clockwork Three, Cave of Wonders and The Lost Kingdom. He won the Edgar Award for Best Juvenile Myster for Icefall.
