Reporters Without Borders Named Freedom Blog Award Winners

The 2005 Freedom Blog Awards have been announced by Reporters Without Borders. 60 blogs were initially selected by Reporters Without Borders that defend freedom of expression. The organization then asked Internet-users to vote for the prize-winners -- one in each geographical category. With the awards Reporters Without Borders wanted to draw attention to the importance of weblogs in countries where the traditional press is under the control of the authorities. Below is a list of the 2005 Freedom Blog Awards:

  • Afghanistan: Shared Pains
  • Morocco: Al Jinane
  • Europe: ITC lex
  • Americas: Press Think
  • Iran: Mojtaba Saminejad
  • Germany: Netzpolitik

    The winning blog in Iran by Mojtaba Saminejad also earned the blogger an unfortunate two-year prison sentence in Iran. In a demonstration of solidarity the 10 webloggers named here, who were also nominated for a prize, all voted for Mojtaba. They were : Nikahang, Shabah, Mithras, Khorshidkhanoom, Z8un, Memarian, Ghaja, Webnaameh, Shabnamefekr, Shargi.
