Popular Chinese Website Adds Chinese/English Search Engine

Posted on April 16, 1998

SinaNet.com, an Internet portal for Chinese users around the world, announced the addition of a Chinese/English search engine that overcomes significant technology barriers to search all Chinese web sites for the first time.

The new search engine, SinaSearch also incorporates a dictionary that translates English or Chinese search phrases into the alternate language. SinaNet.com's proprietary technology, SinaXPress allows SinaSearch interpret both of the Chinese character sets used in web sites today: the "traditional characters" standard used by Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other Asian countries, and the "simplified characters" standard used in Mainland China.

"Until now, Internet users have had to use multiple search engines and make multiple searches in order to make a comprehensive search of all Chinese web sites," said Daniel Chiang, CEO of SinaNet.com. "These limitations frustrate users who want complete information quickly. SinaSearch works regardless of the underlying Chinese sets used by that site, or by the user requesting the search. SinaNet.com is truly the home page for global Chinese."
