Oscar Wilde's Letters to Editor to be Auctioned

Posted on September 21, 2010

Letters written by Oscar Wilde are to be auctioned off on September 24 by Bamfords. The letters are expected to fetch at least $15,000. BBC News reports that the letters "appear to reveal Wilde 'propositioning' a magazine editor at a time when homosexuality was illegal."

The letters were written to Alsager Richard Vian, the editor of the Court & Society Review. Oscar Wilde wrote for the magazine. Vian's descendants are auctioning off the letters that had been kept under lock and key.

The Independent has a detailed article about the letters here. The Independent says in one of the letters Wilde invites Vian to dinner and suggests they both retire at Vian's house afterwards.
