Posted on March 24, 1999

Oscar.com, the official website of the Academy Awards, experienced record traffic during Oscar weekend (Saturday, March 20 - Monday, March 22). More than one-and-a-half million users came to the site during the weekend, generating 12 million impressions.

On Oscar night, Oscar.com offered users many features to enhance their viewing experience. For the first time Oscar.com produced a TV-synchronized Web event -- "And The Envelope Please..." -- a live game meant to be played while watching the Academy Awards telecast. Users were prompted to answer trivia questions about both Oscar history and events during the telecast.

In addition, Oscar.com provided behind-the-scenes access to users through live streaming video of the red carpet arrivals, preshow reports, photos of winners as they accepted their awards, transcripts of winners' acceptance speeches, streaming video of winners' backstage acceptance speeches and an up-to-the-minute list of winners. Oscar.com's reporters had backstage access, providing users with a look at events occurring off-stage during the Academy Awards.
