O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. has launched a new imprint called Patient-Centered Guides. The new consumer health book series is targeted to those who want to become advocates for their own health and medical care.

"We are seeing a democratization of health care information. People are becoming more involved in their own care," said Linda Lamb, editorial director for the series. "There is information pain -- people have an acute problem and need answers right away. With these books we hope to provide health care consumers powerful tools to take charge of their own care."

There are currently three books in the series, with approximately 10 planned for release in the next year. The first, published in June 1997, was Childhood Leukemia: A Guide for Families, Friends & Caregivers. Other titles in the series include Holding Tight, Letting Go: Living With Metastatic Breast Cancer (published September 1997), covering treatment decisions, managing side effects and pain, finding support, family issues, and dealing with emotions, followed by Your Child in the Hospital: A Practical Guide for Parents (published October 1997).

Other books in production are Working With Your Doctor (June 1998), Choosing a Wheelchair (July 1998), Life on Wheels and Hydrocephalus (October 1998).
