Novelists Turn to Comic Books

Posted on May 14, 2007

The latest hot trend for novelists is not to write novels at all: it's writing comic books. Lately, major novelists from Stephen King to Michael Chabon to Jodi Picoult are delving into the world of graphic novels. It's a very different way of writing. Instead of thinking in terms of sentences and grammar, writers have to learn to think visually and to give the illustrator something really interesting to draw.

Jonathan Lethem is working on something for Marvel following his book, Fortress of Solitude. Marvel publisher Dan Buckley tells the Washington Post, "We wanted to see what he was interested in, and he brought it up immediately. Bringing this kind of talent to the room is fantastic. He knows how to tell a story, and his perspective is different from traditional comic writers."

Author Jodi Picoult (Nineteen Minutes) is writing the Wonder Woman series at DC. She is only the second woman to ever write for the series. She tells The Post, "You don't want to go down in history as the one who ruined Wonder Woman. She comes with a history, and a very loyal fan base that doesn't want to see you mess around."

We feel sure that Jodi won't ruin Wonder Woman. In fact, we think she'll do a fabulous job.
