Nominees Announced for Temple University's Best New Magazine Award

Posted on August 6, 1998

The ten magazines nominated for the 1998 Acres of Diamonds Award for Magazine Development have been announced by Temple University's School of Communications and Theater, sponsor of the award with Conde Nast Publications, Inc., and Hachette Filipacchi Magazines.

Nominations for the 1998 Award, which recognizes the best new consumer magazine publication of the nearly 1,000 new magazines introduced in the previous five years, were determined by Folio: the magazine for magazine management, a PriMedia Intertec publication.

This year's nominees (with publisher and year launched) are: Fast Company (U.S. News & World Report & The Atlantic Monthly Co., 1995), Garden Design (Meigher Communications, 1994), George (Hachette Filipacchi Magazines, 1995), Icon Thoughtstyle (ICON, 1997), InStyle (Time, Inc., 1994), Latina (Essence Communications, 1996), Mode (Lewit & Lewinter/Freedom, 1997), POV (BYOB/Freedom, 1995), Time Out New York (Time Out NY, 1995) and Yahoo! Internet Life (Ziff Davis, 1995),

The winning publication will be announced at the Acres of Diamonds Awards luncheon on Monday, November 16, at the Pierre Hotel, Fifth Ave. and 61st St., New York.

"Unlike other honors bestowed in the publishing world that may focus exclusively on editorial and/or design creativity, the Acres of Diamonds Award takes a comprehensive look at a magazine's contribution to its readership," noted Robert M. Greenberg, acting dean of Temple's School of Communications and Theater.

Judges for this year's Acres of Diamonds Award, drawn from the top ranks of magazine publishing and editing, advertising and corporate media buying, are: Roger Carlock, senior vice president, MFS; Lawrence Crutcher, managing director, Veronis, Shuler & Associates; Jean-Louis Ginibre, executive vice president and editorial director, Hachette Filipacchi Magazines; Janice Grossman, executive vice president, Primedia Magazine Corporation; Michael Lafavore, editor-in-chief, Men's Health Magazine, and Robert Viscardi, media director, CTC International.

A portion of the proceeds from the Award luncheon provide a scholarship in the name of the award recipient for a Temple University student in magazine studies.

The Acres of Diamonds Award was first presented in 1992 to Sports Illustrated for Kids. Other winners have been Smart Money (1993), Family Fun (1994), Martha Stewart Living (1995) and Cigar Aficionado (1997).

The Award takes its name from the seminal speech, inspired by a Turkish legend, of Temple University's founder, Dr. Russell Conwell, who believed that "your diamonds are not in far distant mountains or in yonder seas; they are in your own backyard if you but dig for them."
