New Site Provides News and Information on Saipan

Posted on September 29, 1997

Who says there’s no news on tiny islands thousands of miles from the U.S. mainland? That’s sure not true of the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and its capital island, Saipan. Saipan, only 13 miles long, has two daily newspapers, two competing cable television newscasts and several radio stations that do local news.

The new site, titled "News from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands," contains headlines and summaries of all stories appearing on Marianas CableVision and Saipan Cable TV, the Marianas Variety, the Saipan Tribune and the Pacific Daily News, as well as radio stations KCNM and KZMI which gather and present independent newscasts. There is other material from publications such as Guam Business News which run stories involving the CNMI. The site can be found through the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands page at cnmi.net created by Saipan Datacom.

For Saipan Datacom, the news site is just the latest in its efforts to provide ‘local content' on the World Wide Web. Recently a site went up for the Commonwealth government and a wide range of information about the CNMI’s history, culture and weather have been available for some time.
