Posted on November 4, 1998
The Earth Times Foundation has launched, earthtimes.edu, a new monthly newspaper, designed for high school students. The publication -- available in print and on the Web -- focuses on public concerns such as the human environment, health, social issues, population, human rights, education, empowerment of women, trade and economic development. Executive Editor of earthtimes.edu is Louis Silverstein, former Assistant Managing Editor of The New York Times.
"The newspaper gives students and teachers a perspective on critically important aspects of the real world that they get in few other publications," said Stephen Rose, Executive Publisher of earthtimes.edu. "We believe that earthtimes.edu is a particularly useful classroom tool in global studies, environmental studies and other social science areas."
Mr. Rose, former CEO of Ted Bates International, said that the new publication would draw substantially on the resources of The Earth Times, an environmental newspaper that is published daily on the Web. The Earth Times is entering its eighth year of publication; it is produced by veteran journalists such as Mr. Silverstein.
Regular columnists for earthtimes.edu will include prestigious names in journalism, academe and public affairs such as: Tom Wicker, Flora Lewis, Paul Hofmann and John Corry, formerly of The New York Times; John R. Bolton, former US Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations; Dr. Soon-Young Yoon, a leading anthropologist; and Audrey Ronning Topping, an acclaimed author and photojournalist who has specialized in Chinese and Asian issues.
