Media General to Acquire The Hickory Daily Record

Media General, Inc. and the Millholland family of Hickory, N.C., announced an agreement in principle through which Media General would acquire the assets of The Hickory (N.C.) Daily Record.

The Hickory Daily Record has circulation of approximately 20,000 both daily and Sunday, and augments Media General's presence in northwestern North Carolina, where it already owns daily and weekly newspapers with 159,000 daily and more than 160,000 weekly circulation.

Media General also announced that it intends to sell its Kentucky newspaper properties which include The (Somerset) Daily Commonwealth Journal and related weekly publications, but did not disclose a schedule for the sale of these newspapers.

Media General is an independent, publicly owned communications company situated primarily in the Southeast, with interests in newspapers, broadcast and cable television, recycled newsprint production, and diversified information services.
