Posted on August 8, 1997

Hearst Magazines President Cathleen P. Black has named John Atwood editor-in-chief of Sports Afield magazine. Atwood, 41, previously served as executive editor at Men's Journal magazine for the last seven years.

Black commented: "I am confident that John's award-winning talent and experience is the right fit for Sports Afield. His knowledge and understanding about brand extensions is something that will be an important asset to this 110-year-old title."

"Sports Afield is one of the great franchises in American publishing, and as enthusiasm for outdoor sports grows by leaps and bounds, the magazine is on the verge of a great new age. I look forward to continuing the magazine's commitment to fine writing and outstanding service, while expanding its franchise to include even more of the wilderness sports that American men love," Atwood said.

With Men's Journal since its launch in April 1992, Atwood was responsible for planning, scheduling and supervising the editorial, art and production activities for the new men's magazine. During his tenure, the magazine won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1995.

Previously, Atwood was the founding editor of Long Island Monthly, a CMP publication, from 1988 to 1990. He was also the editor of Profiles Inc., a new business and travel publication for Continental Airlines, from 1987 to 1988 and also the editor of Eastern Review, a major in-flight publication, from 1985 to 1987. His career began at Psychology Today, where he served as copy editor.
