Homeland Protection Professional Magazine Launches

Posted on August 16, 2002

Homeland Protection Professional, a publication targeting the fledgling homeland defense community, has launched with a circulation of 20,000. The first issue, which was mailed this week, is directed to a market whose size is estimated to be as large as $138 billion in 2003 sales, according to a recent study released by Deloitte Consulting and Aviation Week.

Aimed at the American emergency response community, the publication's content is designed to help officials from a wide range of disciplines prepare for and respond to acts of domestic terrorism. The targeted readership groups include fire, law enforcement, EMS, emergency management, hospital emergency departments, public health departments, public works, and non-governmental organizations. In addition, Homeland Protection Professional aims to address the needs and concerns of private-sector managers responsible for security and risk management.

The new magazine is published by A.J. Parrino & Associates, Ltd., a company founded by the former publisher of Fire Chief Magazine, Anthony J. Parrino. Scott Baltic, former editor of Fire Chief, is the editor with a team of five contributing editors and designers.

"The aftermath of September 11 has created a whole new paradigm for security," said Parrino. "Currently everything is in the earliest stages of formation and there is still a great deal of confusion within the homeland protection and security community, about such basic issues as what is homeland security and who does it encompass. Our role will be to report on the community's formation, provide the information and insights to first help coalesce the community and then share knowledge and breaking news. We believe the potential readership will be in excess of 60,000 professionals in more than 20 different disciplines but all sharing a common goal."

"Based on our research, our editorial content focuses on providing a balanced mix of overviews on strategic issues mixed with tactical, hands-on applications," said Baltic.

Homeland Protection Professional will be published bi-monthly through the remainder of 2002 and is scheduled to go to a monthly basis in 2003. Individual subscriptions are available without charge to upper-level managers in the emergency response and preparedness community by visiting and registering on the magazine's website. The first issue includes 14 pages of advertising, ranging from associations to specific products.
