Helicopter Parents Hovering at Job Fairs

Posted on November 7, 2006

The term helicopter parents really fits with these over-helpful parents. Helicopter parents have becoming commonplace at job fairs and some even try to answer interview questions for their child or make phone calls to see why their daughter or son did not get the job. Helicopter parents are known for being overly helpful and getting way too involved in their child's career and future.

Fox News reports that Michael Ellis, director of career and life education at Delaware Valley College, says the problem has reached "epidemic proportions. He says a father at the school's job fair last year was handing our her daughter's resume and answering most of the questions asked by recruiters. Some parents are also acting as their child's "representative."

Parents understand how important it is for their child to get a job but they need to know their place in the world. If your parent is hovering too much is will probably turn off potential employers. If you can't handle your own job search without your parents help then employers might think you won't be able to handle your job by yourself either.
