Go the F**k to Sleep Tops Amazon Bestseller List

Posted on May 16, 2011

Adam Mansbach's profanity-laced bedtime book for parents, Go the F**k to Sleep (Akashic Books), is the #1 bestselling book on Amazon.com a month out from its publication date. A New York Times article says excitement over the book helped build a Twitter wave, which then led to the not-yet-published book viraling around the Internet. The cover with a cleverly placed moon by illustrator Ricardo Cortes likely also contributed to people spreading of the book around Facebook and Twitter. The book has quickly become a success based on its cover and title alone, but the poems inside are also funny. Here is an example:

The cubs and the lions are snoring,
Wrapped in a big snuggly heap.
How come you can do all this other great sh*t
But you can't lie the f**k down and sleep?
Akashic Books publisher Johnny Temple told CNN that the book acts an outlet for frustrated parents. He said, "The book is an outlet for that frustration, but it completely reinforces parents sucking it up and dealing with it. There's never a moment where the kid suffers because of the parent. It's actually pretty idealistic."

CNN says there is also a G-rated version of the book in the works that can actually be read to children.
