Ghosts, Stars and Jobs Will Headline Journalists' Convention
Posted on July 21, 1998
The 1998 national convention of the Society of Professional Journalists, Oct. 22 through 25 at Universal City in Los Angeles, will be held jointly with the annual Job Opportunities Conference sponsored by the California Chicano News Media Association. More than 1,000 journalists are expected to be on hand to learn about job opportunities and to discuss the issues of 21st Century journalism. Facilities at both the Universal Hilton and the Sheraton Universal will be required to accommodate the nearly 50 panels, meetings and work shops.
Journalists will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the newest equipment and software in "The Newsroom of the Future" - a combined classroom and regular newsroom, publishing the daily news of the convention in print and electronic formats. Journalists who register for work sessions will get one-on-one training in a real newsroom atmosphere.
The job fair, presented annually by the California Chicano News Media Association is one of the West Coast's biggest employment markets, attracting representatives of the nation's major news organizations. It's an opportunity to interview with dozens of potential employers in one place. Applicants are guaranteed interviews with potential employers.
Rounding out the convention will be a series of panels on Hollywood and the media. There will be films showing how Hollywood views the press and panels of reporters discussing how the press views Hollywood. There will also be appearances by some of Hollywood's big names.
