Flying Solo Launches Website

Posted on June 25, 1997

For almost eight years, Flying Solo, a nationally syndicated weekly newspaper column, has helped Americans deal with the life-altering issues of divorce, separation and aging. Faced with ever-increasing divorce statistics (more than 2.3 million people each year) and aging population, and demand for more information from their readers, columnists Jan Warner and Jan Collins Stucker have launched the Flying Solo website.

Jan Warner, column co-author and matrimonial and elder-law attorney, says in the announcement, "We recognize that, unfortunately, divorce is here to stay and aging is inevitable. Since both situations affect every strata of society and every age bracket, and both can devastate people financially, psychologically and emotionally, our goal is to arm as many people as possible with practical, easy-to-understand information about how they can take charge of their lives."

Flying Solo provides information in a simple, easy-to-navigate format, with subject categories grouped under two major sections: Divorce & Separation and Elderly & Disabled. In addition, the site's Media Library offers a variety of books, videos and audio cassettes.

The Divorce & Separation section is divided into 12 subsections that include General Divorce, Military Divorce, Divorce and Estate Planning, and Divorce Tax. Other important topics covered are Bankruptcy, Remarriage and Stepfamilies, Mediation, Unmarried Cohabitants, and State Information. The Flying Solo newspaper columns and FAQ are also found in this section.

Each of these subsections contain articles on many aspects of the subject at hand. For example, information covered under General Divorce includes articles on "What to Expect When You are Testifying," "Enforcement of Court Orders," guides to visitation and joint custody language, and "Social Security: What You Should Know Before You Divorce."

Under Elderly & Disabled are the subsections General Elderly and Disabled, Long Term Care, Social Security and Medicare, and Estate Planning. Long Term Care, for example, contains articles on "Resident Rights In Long Term Care Facilities," "The Relationship Between Medicaid and Medicare," and the very important and current topic of "Medicaid and SSI Coverage of Children Under Welfare Reform."

While the majority of Flying Solo information is free, some of the articles are accessible only to members of the site. An annual membership of $15.95 provides access to the restricted articles, two bi-weekly newsletters (one about divorce and separation and the other about issues affecting the elderly and disabled) and discounts of up to 15% on all Media Library printed materials, video tapes, audio tapes and diskettes.

Attorney Jan L. Warner conceived the Flying Solo newspaper column, and co-authors it and the Web site with award-winning journalist and author Jan Collins Stucker.
