EMI Christian Music Group announced the formation of EMI Gospel, a new wholly-owned label, and the label's first signing - Lamar Campbell & Spirit of Praise. EMI Gospel, which begins operations immediately from EMI CMG's corporate offices in Brentwood, Tennessee, will be led by Managing Director Ken Pennell. Chordant Distribution Group will handle distribution to the Christian retail market while EMI Music Distribution (EMD) will distribute EMI Gospel to the general retail market.
"The formation of EMI Gospel represents a major commitment for our business. We have always considered gospel an important priority, but now with a dedicated label and staff, led by Ken Pennell, one of the most respected executives in gospel music, we can more fully serve this great musical genre," said Bill Hearn, President and CEO of EMI CMG.
Pennell, who has been in the Christian music business for more than 20 years, was formerly Vice President of A&R at Benson Records, where he oversaw the recordings of Grammy-winner Hezekiah Walker, Larnelle Harris, Albertina Walker, Fred Hammond and more. At EMI Gospel, Pennell will be responsible for the direction and management of the label, signing new artists, overseeing album projects and artist development. Shawn Tate will be Director of Marketing.
EMI Gospel's first signing, Lamar Campbell & Spirit of Praise, originate from Indianapolis. Campbell is a prolific songwriter, and has also signed a long-term exclusive publishing agreement with EMI Christian Music Publishing. He has written most of the songs for his debut recording, which is being produced by Grammy and Dove-winning producer Sanchez Harley (Hezekiah Walker, Shirley Ceasar, Patti Austin). The self-titled album and a companion live concert video will release in May.
