Detroit Free Press Launches Website Celebrating Motown's 40th
Posted on February 16, 1998
To celebrate 40 years of Motown the Detroit Free Press has launched a new Web site dedicated to the Motown sound and its musical roots. The new site includes the Free Press' list of Motown's 40 greatest songs, with audio clips. The site's photo gallery features unforgettable shots of the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder and other Motown artists. In the story archives, readers can trace Motown back to its beginnings, when assembly line worker and part-time songwriter Berry Gordy Jr., decided to start a recording company. More recent stories tell what the stars are up to now. Many, including the three surviving members of the Four Tops, still live in Detroit.
The Free Press will continue to add content to the site throughout the year. Web travelers are invited to stop by frequently, whenever they want to read the latest news, enjoy the sights and sounds of Hitsville USA or share their Motown Memories in the public forum.
Motown at 40 is one of four Web sites produced by the Free Press, Michigan's largest daily newspaper also publishes news on Freep.com; auto news and reviews at auto.com and news for kids at Yak's Comer. The Free Press is a Knight Ridder newspaper; its Web sites are part of the Real Cities network.
Update: The Motown at 40 site is no longer available.
