Cursive Writing: A Lost Art?

Posted on January 20, 2005

While cursive writing is still taught in schools it is losing ground to keyboard skills. 9-year-old Monique told the Associated Press why cursive writing is not as useful. "Computers are better," said Monique. "With typing, you don't have to erase when you make a mistake. You just hit delete, so it's a lot easier."

A recent Houston Chronicle article notes that many teachers no longer require cursive writing on assignments. Howie Schaffer, a spokesman for Public Education Network, told the Chronicle, "Schools have transitioned from spending an enormous time on letters to switching to computer keyboarding."

The time spent writing in cursive is also down among adults. With most people sending much more electronic mail than snail mail these days cursive handwriting could fade as people fall out of practice.
