Chapters and The Globe And Mail to Launch Canadian Book Website

Posted on March 26, 1998

Chapters Inc. announced the signing of an agreement with The Globe and Mail to jointly develop chaptersglobe.com, a Canadian Internet book site. The companies expect the site to be fully operational in the fall of 1998.

The site will enable visitors to the site to browse through The Globe and Mail's recognized book reviews and bestsellers lists and then be able to purchase the books they have just read about through the Chapters online service.

Chapters will offer Canada's largest online source of books, with over two million titles, many of which are not available from U.S.-based online book stores. All books will be sourced from Canadian publishers and distributors, guaranteeing that readers will receive a Canadian edition whenever possible. Currently, Canadians purchasing books from U.S.-based online book stores often receive U.S. editions, even if the titles are Canadian.

Chapters Inc. is the largest book retailer in Canada operating bookstores in all provinces. The company currently operates a total of 338 bookstores across Canada under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, Classic Books, LibrairieSmith, The Book Company, and the World's Biggest Bookstore. Chapters is committed to supporting the Canadian book industry and actively promotes literacy and Canadian authors and publishers through relationships with Frontier College, the Writers' Development Trust and the Chapters/Books In Canada First Novel Award.
