Authors of published articles focusing on electronic information technology, information systems, databases, the Internet, the World Wide Web, or the online industry may be eligible for a cash award and international recognition. The annual "Excellence in Writing" award is sponsored by UMI, a Bell & Howell company .

The $1,500 cash award and a trophy are presented to the winner at the International Online program in London, England sponsored by Learned Information Ltd. This year's program will be December 8, 9, and 10. UMI is now accepting nominations for the 1998 award.

The worldwide competition is open to authors, individually or as a group, whose work has been published in any journal between August 1997 and July 1998. An article submitted by a group must designate one individual as the primary author. If a primary author is not designated, the article will not be considered.

The winning article will be chosen by a three judge panel based on relevance, originality, clarity, timeliness, accuracy, and quality of research. Judges for this year's contest are Charles Bunge, Paula Hane, and Carol Tenopir.

The article considered by the three-judge panel must be an original work, whether published under an individual or group by-line. The article may be written in any language. Authors may nominate themselves. However, judges can not nominate articles. In addition, judges may not nominate for consideration any articles they authored or edited between August 1997 and July 1998.
