Borders and the National Book Foundation Mark National Book Month

Posted on January 7, 2000

Borders Books and Music stores have teamed with the National Book Foundation, sponsor of The National Book Award, for a celebration to be launched simultaneously with January's National Book Month. Beginning in January and continuing throughout the remainder of 2000, Borders stores will feature the work of one National Book Award Winner per month, along with the books that changed his or her life as a writer.

To kick off the celebration, Borders will feature the work of David McCullough, two-time National Book Award winning author of Mornings on Horseback and Truman as well as the 1995 recipient of the National Book Foundation Medal For Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. McCullough will appear at the Borders store in downtown Boston, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion of the books that influenced his life as an author.

Borders Books and Music stores throughout the U.S. will also host National Book Month events throughout January and will feature "The Books That Changed My Life" titles in display areas all year. Borders.com will also participate in the program by featuring a "Books That Changed My Life" boutique which includes a listing of the 12 featured authors, including John Updike, Cynthia Ozick, Don DeLillo, and E. L. Doctorow.

"We're excited to team with The National Book Foundation to bring such an important initiative to our customers," said Rich Flanagan, president of Borders, Inc. "It's an honor to have authors like David McCullough participate in an examination of books and their power to influence and change lives."
