Ana Maria Matute Wins Cervantes Prize

Ana Maria Matute has won the Cervantes Prize. The 85-year-old Barcelona writer will receive the $183,000 stipend. The awards ceremony was attended by by the Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodr�guez Zapatero, the Spanish Minister of Culture, �ngeles Gonzalez-Sinde

Ana Maria said at a news conference, "I take it as a recognition, if not of the quality of my work, then at least of the effort and dedication that I have devoted to writing throughout my life."

The Cervantes Prize was established in 1975 by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
