1999 Audie Award Winners Announced

The Audio Publishers Association (APA) has announced the winners of the 1999 Audie Awards, honoring excellence in audio publishing in 25 categories. This year, 550 audiobooks, with release dates between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 1998, were submitted for consideration. Finalists and winners were selected by 54 judges recruited from a variety of backgrounds within the audiobook and book publishing industries, excluding audio publishers themselves.

The Audie Award ceremony took place at the Regal Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, California on the first night of the BEA, the biggest bookseller and publisher convention of the year. For the first time, the ceremony was a black-tie reception and dinner, during which the Audie winners received elegant, newly designed crystal awards. Such notables as Nelson DeMille, Frank McCourt, Martin Jarvis, and Rosalyn Ayres took part in the ceremony as winners and presenters.

In addition to the Audie Awards, a new award for Special Achievement debuted at this year's ceremony. The Special Achievement Award, selected by the APA Board of Directors, recognizes individuals or organizations who have made outstanding contributions to building consumer awareness of audiobooks and to fostering the growth of the audiobook industry. This year Publishers Weekly and Rochelle Marie O'Gorman were the recipients of the award. Fred Ciporen, Vice-President and Group Publisher of Publishers Weekly (the official trade magazine of the publishing industry) accepted the award on behalf of the magazine. The second Special Achievement award recognized Rochelle Marie O'Gorman who reviews audiobooks for The Los Angeles Times, the New York Post, the Boston Globe, and Pulse magazine, among others.

The APA is a not-for-profit trade organization consisting of over 200 member companies including publishers, resellers, distributors, and suppliers along with other collateral industries. The mandate of the APA is to build awareness of the audiobook medium; to promote excellence in audiobook production; to initiate research and distribution of relevant data; and to nurture constructive relationships among all segments of the industry.
