Welcome to the January 1998 issue!1998 promises to be an interesting year for electronic publishers. As the squabbling over the use of Java with its much-touted cross platform capabilities and the problems it causes to older browsers continues, the focus is shifting to the use of Dynamic HTML to create more interactivity on websites. As publishers explore new ways to attract advertisers and expand readership, content will continue to increase, which is good news for the subscribers to electronic publications. We believe that 1998 will also be a great year for freelancers. As more publications move online, the need for professional writers will only increase. Look for this market to be somewhat cyclical in the short-term, however, as magazines and newspapers struggle to determine the number of people it takes to efficiently run a website or online publication. Clearly, freelancers who gain online experience now will be ahead of their competition as Howard Tyner, Editor of the Chicago Tribune noted in the November, 1997 issue of the IWJ. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for writers to keep up with the Internet as it begins to play a larger role in the writing and publishing worlds. We intend to be there bringing you the latest news and trends, here and on The Write NewsTM. We wish you all a prosperous and Happy New Year! Claire E. White Editor-in-Chief Gregory A.
