TechTarget.com, creator of industry-specific IT Web portals, has announced the acquisition of Whatis.com, a website which provides definitions to technology terms and acronyms. TechTarget.com will add Whatis.com's content to its IT-specific portals.
``We are very excited to acquire a site that provides real value to users. The information provided by Whatis.com fills a real need in the marketplace - the need for clear, easy to understand definitions of technology terms,'' said Greg Strakosch, CEO of TechTarget.com. TechTarget.com's editorial team, under the direction of Paul Gillin, former editor in chief of Computerworld, will be adding new terms to Whatis.com on a regular basis to keep pace with the proliferation of technology terms.
``Whatis.com provides information for everyone -- from basics through very technical terms. We started on a dining room table by writing down a number of words we wanted to look up quickly. And then we thought, 'why not be able to click on a word and have information about it on- screen, with links to all the related terms?'' said Whatis.com founder, Lowell Thing.
TechTarget.com's other sites include: SearchStorage.com, an affinity destination for IT professionals focused on enterprise storage; Search400.com and SearchDomino.com, serving IBM AS/400 and Lotus Domino markets respectively. TechTarget.com was founded in 1999 as a spin-off of United Communications Group, one of the largest business-to-business information providers in the U.S., with more than one million clients worldwide.
