This second installment in the Krondor series set in
the popular fantasy world Midkemia focuses more on events
in the city of Krondor, whereas the first book (See, Krondor:
The Betrayal) was set mostly outside of Krondor.
In the city of Krondor, the Mockers are the gang of
pickpockets and thieves who live in the sewers
below the city. Squire James, who used to be a
thief called Jimmy the Hand when he was a Mocker
himself, is called in by Prince Arutha to find out
who is killing the Mockers and what it means.
Arutha is a wily ruler who keeps his finger on the
pulse of all the activities in his crown city,
illegal or not. James' investigation takes him to the
subterranean tunnel and sewer system, where he
finds that the Mockers are fighting for their lives
against a group of assassins who answer to someone
known as the Crawler. James and Prince Arutha
set out to find the Crawler and discover a terrible
evil that is bent on destroying Krondor.
The second book in the RiftWar legacy series continues the theme of a threat to Krondor which could destroy the city. But this threat is a little closer to home -- the Crawler and his sick followers have their headquarters in a deserted Keshian fortress. Prince Arutha sees more action in this adventure, and the showdown is jam-packed with magic, near-escapes, and battle with a particularly nasty demon. This is great stuff for fans of classic fantasy novels.
