The Daily Reduces Staff By One Third

Posted on August 6, 2012

The Daily is a digital iPad newspaper published by News Corp. The digital paper was launch in early 2011 and has over 100,000 paying subscribers according to News Corp. This is an impressive number for an iPad newspaper. However, it is short of the 500,000 monthly reader goal Rupert Murdoch wanted for the digital publication to be profitable. This shortcoming likely explains the recent layoffs.

All Things D reports that the The Daily is firing 50 of its 170 employees - nearly one third of its staff. The Sports and Opinion sections of The Daily are also being reorganized.

News Corp also issued the following statement: "The changes announced today at The Daily will enable the business to operate more efficiently and with even greater focus on the types of content that consumers have gravitated towards since its launch. News Corporation remains committed to The Daily, and the publication will continue to be an important part of our leading portfolio of publishing brands going forward."
