The 25th World Fantasy Convention
November 4-7, 1999
This year's annual World Fantasy Convention is held in Providence, Rhode Island. This year's theme is theme is "Voyages." Talk at the conference will be about journeying and travelers, about territories, maps, and cartographers. There will also be discussion about the paths of fantasy literature and the evolution of the genre.

Contests

Blue Mountain Arts is featuring a poetry contest with an expiration date of October 20th, 1999. Prizes include: four first prizes of $300, four 2nd prizes of $150 and eight third prizes of $50 each. Poems can be submitted through an online form. Click here for rules and details about how to enter.

The ASCAP Foundation/Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest is still accepting entries. Eligible applicants are women not currently signed to a recording or music publishing contract. Applicants must submit one original song on cassette or CD, clearly typed or printed lyric sheets, and a completed application. The deadline for submissions is November 15, 1999. Winners will be announced in the Spring of 2000. Applications for entry and information about entering can be obtained on the website.

Teen writers can enter the "Keeping Your Cool: Teens Against Violence" which began on September 27, 1999. Entrants will write a 750 to 1000 word essay discussing why they believe there has been such a recent dramatic rise in teenage violence, and what they believe can be done to prevent it. The entries will be separated into two different age brackets, 13 through 15 years old, and 16 through 19. In each age bracket, there will be one 1st place winners who will each be awarded a $1,500 scholarship, one 2nd place winners receiving a $750 scholarship, and one 3rd place winners receiving a $500 scholarship.
