Kelly Barnhill Wins 2017 Newbery Medal for The Girl Who Drank the Moon

The 2017 Newbery Medal has been awarded to The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. The book was published by Algonquin Young Readers, an imprint which was founded in 2013. This is the imprint's first Newbery award. The fantasy novel is about a girl who has an unusual upbringing: she is raised by a witch, a swamp monster and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon. Monica Crowley, Donald Trump's nominee to be senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council, has withdrawn from consideration for the post after a plaigiarism scandal. Donald Trump Boots Biographer Off Golf Course

President-elect Donald Trump kicked one of his biographers off his golf course Friday in Florida. Harry Hurt, the author of The Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump, was set to play golf at the Trump International Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, with billionaire and conservative mega donor David Koch. A Princess and an Author: Carrie Fisher Taken Too Soon

Fans are in mourning after the news that actress and bestselling author Carrie Fisher has died at the age of 60. She suffered a major heart attack while flying home from London to Los Angeles. Although she was given CPR on the plane and was taken immediately to the hospital upon landing, she never regained consciousness. James Patterson Donates $250,000 to Independent Booksellers

James Patterson, in cooperation with the American Booksellers Association, announced the names of the independent booksellers that will receive grants from his Holiday Bookstore Bonus Program. Patterson, who is passionate about literacy and reading, will give out $250,000 total divided between 149 independent booksellers. The individual amounts range between $1,000 and $5,000. Read more... 1500 guests wearing black tie attended the ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall in Stockholm, Sweden to preset the 2016 Nobel Prizes.
