The International Web Page Awards Announces Call for Entries

A call for entries went out this week officially opening the second season for The International Web Page Awards, an independent festival of web page graphic artists and designers meeting to judge and evaluate each others' creativity on the Internet.

Established in 1998, the festival's first year drew entries from over 13 different countries. Seventy different judges, all graphic artists and web designers, participated in evaluating websites. Judges reviewed entries utilizing a 26 question critique based on the attributes of the website, directly over the Internet. Each site was reviewed by four different Judges. The questions consisted of 10 for graphic design, 10 for content and 6 for programming.

In the 1998 competition Media Revolution beat out 450 entries to win the "Best of Festival" award for its Prince of Egypt website. Finishing second, one vote behind was independent designer Matt LoBato with his personal website. Eighteen companies won "Best of Category" awards, including, which picked up two awards for the News and Print/Zines categories. Other double winners were BBDO Interactive of Dusseldorf, Germany in the categories of Finance and Product Information, for sites it created for Citibank and Volkswagon; San Francisco-based SF Interactive in the categories of Product Purchase and Reference-Information; and New York’s Agency.Com for Arts and Travel.

According to the festivals Chairman, Edwin Fish, "What The International Web Page Awards set out to do was to create a very high profile and prestigious award and awards ceremony, solely for the recognition of outstanding graphic design and creativity on the Internet. The competition is open to all websites. It gives the opportunity for smaller design firms and individuals to compete against much larger and well-known advertising agencies and interactive design shops. The popularity of the website is not relevant to the competition."

The International Web Page Awards has established 30 categories including advertising, arts, entertainment, corporate, finance, education, health, news, personal Web pages, religion/philosophy, science, sports and travel. The closing date for entries is November 30, 1999. Entry fees are $85.00 US per website, per category.
