The American Experience Launches Three Mile Island Website

Posted on February 23, 1999

It was never supposed to happen. In the predawn hours of March 28, 1979, a reactor at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, suddenly began to overheat. The lives of a million people soon hung in the balance; as mechanical failure and human error combined to create the worst nuclear accident in American history. Twenty years later, The American Experience Online Meltdown at Three Mile Island website tells the story of the frantic race to avert nuclear disaster.

The Meltdown at Three Mile Island site accompanies the broadcast of The American Experience's one-hour documentary on Monday, February 22 at 9 pm on PBS. The American Experience Online appears on PBS Online.

The American Experience Online produces a companion website for every new television broadcast of The American Experience, with information beyond the broadcast including program schedules, teacher's guides, audience feedback and links to related sites.
