American Lawyer Media, Inc. (ALM) has named Richard Barbieri as editor in chief of Legal Times, the company's weekly newspaper based in Washington, D.C.

Barbieri, 35, has served as executive editor of The American Lawyer magazine for the past 18 months, and also as editor of ALM's Corporate Counsel magazine, where he recently helped oversee the redesign and relaunch of the publication as a monthly. Over his 10-year career at ALM and its predecessor companies, Barbieri has served as a reporter and editor covering the legal industry, the criminal and civil court systems, and local, state and federal agencies in California, New York and Washington. His work includes assignments as the executive editor of The Recorder in San Francisco and as an editor at Legal Times.

"Rich's extensive experience as both an editor and reporter, combined with his understanding of the legal, political and regulatory systems, provides an ideal background for his new job," said William Pollak, President and Chief Executive Officer of ALM. "As our primary news-gathering operation in the nation's capital, Legal Times plays a key role in providing print and electronic coverage, not just for its own readers, but also for ALM subscribers and website visitors across the country. We're delighted that Rich will be guiding our news staff in fulfilling this mission."
