Reuters Creates Online News Service For Teens

Posted on July 15, 1997

Reuters NewMedia today launched Reuters Teen MagNet, an online news package designed to reach the growing number of teens on the Internet. Reuters Teen MagNet report delivers a daily 10-story package of teen-oriented international news and features to web sites and web publishers.

Reuters Teen MagNet carries news from Reuters global wires and includes stories written by Reuters global network of teen correspondents, ranging in age from 12-17.

Reuters Teen MagNet editors work closely with these teen reporters, from countries such as Australia, England, Israel and the United States, to develop and write stories for the service. Teen MagNet reporters plan to cover a wide range of topics from politics, health, ethics, the environment to book, music and film reviews, and interviews.

Recently, as a test run for the service, a group of six Denver-based Teen MagNet correspondents obtained press credentials to cover the G7 economic summit in Denver, Colorado. The teen journalists filed stories that explored life for teens in non-G7 countries and explained the relevance of the summit's proceedings.

"Reuters has created a unique news wire to fill the increasing demand on the Web for content geared toward teens," said Katie King, Director, Reuters Teen MagNet, "Not only does the service give teens something compelling and interesting to read, but it also gives Teen MagNet correspondents a unique opportunity to work with seasoned journalists to select stories and build writing and interviewing skills."
