Reed Business Information Forms New Book Publishing Unit

Posted on January 17, 2003

Tad Smith, president of the Reed Business Information (RBI) Media Group, announced the formation of a new business unit, RBI Press, and the appointment of Fred Ciporen as its president. Ciporen recently served as VP/Group Publisher of RBI's Publishing Group, which includes Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and School Library Journal. The book imprint could create some conflicts of interest. For example, will RBI's print magazines like Publishers Weekly be reviewing these new books? However, the new imprint does make good business sense considering RBI's large target market of industry professionals.

RBI Press adds book publishing to the RBI Media Group, which currently publishes 23 business-to-business magazines including Variety, Broadcasting & Cable and Interior Design. Although still under development, the imprints published by RBI Press will be varied and feature titles for the institutional, school, library, business and professional markets. RBI Press expects to publish 12 to 18 books a year, and to announce its fall list at BookExpo America in May.

"Fred Ciporen has spent 15 years in a pivotal role observing the best ways to market great books," stated Jim Casella, CEO of Reed Business Information. "We're excited that he has agreed to step into this critical role to launch this new business."

Tad Smith is expected to make an annoucement soon about Ciporen's replacement as publisher of the magazines in the RBI Publishing Group.
