Phising Scam Says Twitter to Charge in October

Posted on August 19, 2011

Sophos is reporting a phising scam is trying to lure Twitter users into clicking on a bad link. The scam warns that Twitter might start charging in October and urges them to sign a petition to keep Twitter free. This is a scam. Twitter has no plans to start charging.

Twitter did tweet about the scam from its @safety account. Twitter said, "Seeing Tweets that you need to sign a petition to keep Twitter free? Don't click. It's fake and will steal your password."

Sophos says people that have been hit by the scam should change their Twitter password and revoke all application API access.

Sophos also suggests examining short URLs on longurl.org to find out where links really take you when you click on them.
