New York Times and BBC Announce Audio Content Agreement
Posted on April 5, 2002New York Times Digital, the digital business unit of The New York Times Company, and BBC World Service, an international radio broadcaster, announced that the NYTimes.com website will incorporate links to BBC World Service English audio content. In the first agreement of its kind between the BBC World Service and a U.S. newspaper website, links to global news programs and hourly news bulletins from the BBC will be showcased on the international section of NYTimes.com.
Users will be able to access three BBC programs:
- World Update, a daily news program for U.S. listeners who want an in-depth briefing on world affairs.
- PRI's The World, a co-production of BBC World Service, Public Radio International and WGBH Boston. Also daily, the program is designed for a U.S. audience to bring international stories to listeners.
- World Service Bulletins, which provide up-to-the-minute news in a short, five-minute format.
"This is the first significant agreement with a U.S. newspaper website for the provision of BBC content. It furthers an ongoing strategy of BBC World Service to build our reputation and profile by providing content to leading online news sites in significant territories around the world. We are already in discussions with New York Times Digital to widen the scope of the content provided," said Miles Palmer, head of business development, BBC World Service.
