Ask Jeeves Acquires Etour Assets

Posted on May 22, 2001

Ask Jeeves, Inc., announced it has acquired certain assets of eTour, Inc., a direct marketing and Internet media company, for an undisclosed amount of cash. Included in the assets are: the eTour.com< Web property, which has 4.5 million registered users and 370,000 daily unique users; a proprietary direct email marketing technology with 2.2 million unique newsletter subscribers; and 230 vertical website "tours". Etour was accused of violating its privacy policy by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) when it sold some information about customers as part of the sale of its assets to Ask Jeeves.

Ask Jeeves will continue to operate the eTour.com website. Ask Jeeves will integrate eTour's direct website delivery engine into the Ask Jeeves website by the fourth quarter of 2001. The integration will include the vertical website tours that were developed and maintained by eTour.

``The assets we've purchased through this transaction will be an important part of our long-term success. These include universal registration technology, direct e-mail marketing capabilities, more than 4.5 million registered users, deeper vertical content and a high caliber advertiser base,'' said Skip Battle, CEO of Ask Jeeves, Inc. ``Our users will benefit from a greater depth of vertical content topics that range from careers to apparel, and advertisers will benefit from new targeted ad products.''
