Pennywise from It holding a balloon

The It movie is a monster hit. The film based on Stephen King's novel featuring Pennywise had a $117 million opening. This is the best opening weekend ever for a horror movie. The scary film also had the best opening day for a horror movie at $51 million. It is the second best opening for an R-rated movie after Deadpool. It pulled off the box office record despite theaters in Florida impacted by Hurricane Irma. It has a B+ CinemaScore.

It made over $100 million more than the second place film, Home Again. The dramedy starring Reese Witherspoon was written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer. It has a B+ CinemaScore.

Home Again was followed by The Hitman's Bodyguard which has now made $64.9 million after four weeks in theaters. Annabelle: Creation came in fourth and Wind River finished 5th. Wind River was followed by Leap!, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Dunkirk, Logan Lucky and The Emoji Movie.

You can view the box office chart for the weekend here. It will face challenges from new arrivals Mother!, American Assassin and Brad's Status. Mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence has been getting good reviews but it will be tough to beat It's second weekend after such a huge opening.
